In April, the UK Supreme Court made a judgment on the legal definition of sex, in relation to the Equality Act 2010.

As a trade union and professional body, we want to understand how this judgment affects members in their role and workplace.  As nursing professionals, we must continue to deliver safe, compassionate care to all, upholding dignity regardless of their sex, gender or views.

Starting this month, we’re holding online and in-person sessions providing a safe, inclusive space for members to discuss their thoughts on the impact of the judgment on employment and clinical practice, and how to protect the privacy and dignity of patients.

By taking part, you’ll learn more about the judgment and our response to the Equality and Human Rights Commission consultation and help shape our professional guidance and organisational response.

Executive Director of ÍâÍøÌìÌà England Patricia Marquis said: “We know this judgment has caused upset, worry, confusion and concern for many of our members. Let me be clear - the ÍâÍøÌìÌà stands in support with our LGBTQIA+ members. We’ve heard from many that it’s led to lots of negativity towards trans people and some feel very unsafe. This is unacceptable, nobody should have to face discrimination and harassment. The ÍâÍøÌìÌà will continue to champion equality, inclusion and human rights across the profession.

“We’re committed to supporting all our members and these sessions will be carefully facilitated to allow open, informed and respectful conversation.”
