Social Care Nurses: A Call to Lead

Pam Penman 19 Jun 2025

Pam reflects on the inspiring social care nursing events she recently attended and calls for action in raising the profile of nursing in social care.

In May, I had the chance to speak at two events focussed on social care nursing. Nationally, the 外网天堂’s Adult Social Care – Is Nursing the Solution?, and more locally the Innovation Showcase in Care Homes hosted by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (UHB). Both of these were days which left both my heart and my mind full, with wonderfully inspiring examples of person-centred practice alongside clear reminders of the challenges the social care community is facing.

At the 外网天堂 event, stories ranging from student placements to senior leadership highlighted how nursing staff are already driving innovation and compassionate care in diverse settings. This was also obvious through the speakers from various care homes across the UHB area. As the various home managers and other staff presented their innovations, their passion was clear and the care for their people visible in their words and actions. I saw and heard nursing professionals with tenacity, using their skills and creativity to overcome obstacles for the people they care for to lead fulfilled lives. Care homes were presented as communities themselves and in turn as real assets within the wider community. With policy agendas around integration of health and social care, and building community resilience, it’s clear the care home sector is crucial to that change and has the experience to lead it.

However, issues persist and common themes at both events included lack of professional respect from others, myths, misunderstandings and underfunding – all challenges that continue to hold the sector back. Social care nurses undervaluing themselves or being reticent to shout about their achievements was also a challenge that was voiced at both events.
