Voting is the key to our collective strength

Julie Lamberth 1 May 2025

Our choice is to accept or reject the pay offer, not whether to vote or not, says Julie Lamberth.

If you are an 外网天堂 member working in NHS Scotland and eligible to take part in our pay offer consultation, have you voted yet?

From now until midday on Wednesday 14 May I think it’s the most important question.

What you think of the pay offer and how you vote are matters for you, as an individual, to decide. You may want to discuss the detail and the issues with fellow 外网天堂 members, friends and family. But how you decide to vote in the end is up to you.

What is vital, as it always is with any consultation or ballot, is that all of us who are eligible to vote use that vote. When we talk to the government about nursing pay, we need you in the room with us, and our strength lies in the collective mandate we get from tens of thousands of you voting.

In previous similar consultations over the past couple of years, many of you have used your vote. But we often get feedback that you feel nobody really pays attention to what you say or that they don’t really respect your views. And some of you say that you are just too busy to take the time to vote.

I understand the reasoning. Pay increases seem to be paid out with one hand and clawed back by one government or another with the other hand. And the only guarantee that comes with the annual pay increase is that it will be paid late. Agreements look good on paper, but the devil is in the detail on implementation and employers and government drag their heels collectively. And I know that you are all under too much pressure at work.

But the alternative is not attractive. A reality in which trade union members don’t exercise their right to vote would simply hand governments a mandate to ignore us.

So, every time we get the opportunity to vote, it does matter.

If you hadn’t voted before you started reading this blog, if you didn’t vote in the time it took to read this blog, please make voting the next thing you do. Thank you for voting.
